The short answer

Cold-pressed means the oil was squeezed out mechanically without added heat: berries or seeds go through a press, friction does the work, and the temperature stays low enough that the delicate compounds survive. It is the traditional method, and a respectable one.

How the process works

A mechanical screw or hydraulic press crushes the plant material and the oil flows out. No chemical solvents touch anything. Friction generates some warmth on its own, so “cold” means no external heating rather than literally cold. The yield is lower than solvent methods, which is part of why pressed oils cost more. What pressing cannot do is select: it releases whatever the raw material carries, so a pressed oil from stale berries is still a stale oil. A harvest date on the label is the closest proxy a buyer gets for that part of the story.

How it shows up on labels

“Cold-pressed” is everywhere, from supermarket olive oil to sea buckthorn, and the term is loosely regulated in many markets. On a sea buckthorn label it tells you the gentleness of the process and nothing else: not the plant part, not the omega-7 content, not the freshness. Reading the claim word by word

“Cold-pressed” on a sea buckthorn bottle borrows its credibility from olive oil culture, where the term has tighter traditions. Here it simply says mechanical pressing without added heat. Some labels borrow further and print “first cold press,” a phrase with real meaning in olive grading and little meaning for sea buckthorn, where there is no second press to distinguish it from.

A fully honest label example reads: seed oil or berry oil named first, Hippophae rhamnoides named second, cold-pressed named third. The pressing claim ranks third because the plant part and the species change what is in the bottle far more than the method does.

The honest caveat

Cold pressing is good, and CO2 extraction is generally better for this particular plant, because it extracts more completely and preserves heat-sensitive compounds like carotenoids even more thoroughly. Is cold-pressed sea buckthorn oil good?

It can be excellent. Cold pressing is a gentle, traditional method with no solvents involved. But the claim covers the method only: it says nothing about plant part, freshness, or fatty-acid content, all of which matter more to what is actually in the bottle.

Is cold-pressed the same as unrefined?

No. Pressing is how the oil comes out of the plant, refining is what happens to it afterward. An oil can be cold-pressed and then refined, which strips color and flavor compounds. The best sea buckthorn oils are both mechanically extracted and unrefined, and the label should say both.
