The short answer

The omega number is an address, not a ranking. It marks where the first double bond sits counting from the tail end of a fatty acid molecule: 3, 6, 7, or 9 carbons in. Omega-3 and omega-6 are essential, your body cannot make them. Omega-7 and omega-9 it can. Sea buckthorn is one of the few plants that stocks all four across its two oils.

What the number means

A fatty acid is a carbon chain with a tail (the omega end) and a head. Count in from the tail and the position of the first double bond gives the name. Omega-3 has its first double bond three carbons in, omega-6 six carbons in, and so on. The position changes how the molecule behaves in the body, which is why chemists and nutritionists bother with the system at all. Bigger number does not mean better. It is geography, not a score.

The four you actually meet

Omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid). Essential. The seed oil of sea buckthorn carries roughly 20 to 35 percent of it, and the usual food sources are flax, walnuts, and oily fish.

Omega-6 (linoleic acid). Essential. Roughly 30 to 40 percent of sea buckthorn seed oil. Common everywhere in nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils.

Omega-7 (palmitoleic acid). Non-essential, and the reason this site exists. The berry oil is its richest common plant source, per the omega-7 entry.

Omega-9 (oleic acid). Non-essential. The olive oil fat, present modestly in both sea buckthorn oils and abundant in your kitchen already.

On labels: the “complete” blend trick

“Omega 3, 6, 7, 9 complete” on a front label usually means a blend of berry oil and seed oil in one bottle. Complete is a pleasant word with no standard behind it: no rule says how much of each omega, or how much of each oil, earns the claim. The decode is always the same two questions: how much of each fatty acid, and what is the berry-to-seed ratio.

The ratio decides what you are really buying. A seed-heavy blend prints the same four numbers as a berry-heavy one while carrying a fraction of the omega-7, because the seed oil has almost none. Four numbers on the front, one missing on the back.
