Check 1: Was it human?

The evidence ladder runs cell dish, animal, human. Check 3: Was there a placebo?

A 2024 trial measured the same outcome against a real placebo and found hydration up 8 percent. Check 4: Who paid?

The 2024 trial was industry-funded, run with a branded oil from the company that sells it, and we say so wherever we cite it. Funding does not falsify a result: the trial was placebo-controlled and its modest numbers are credible. But funded research as a literature skews favorable, so a brand-funded positive counts for less than an independent one. The check takes ten seconds, because funding statements sit at the end of every paper. A label quoting a study without its funding line has done your homework badly on purpose.

Check 5: Where was it published?

Journal quality is a screen, not a verdict, and PubMed indexing is the fastest version of it. The 2009 skin study appeared in the Journal of Applied Cosmetology, which is not PubMed-indexed, so we link the hosted PDF and label it exactly that way. Most of the corpus, from the dry-eye trial to the lipid meta-analysis, sits in indexed journals with PMIDs you can verify in one click. Absence from the index does not make a study fake. It removes one layer of quality control, and your confidence should adjust.

Check 6: Is the dose realistic?

Ask what the participants actually took and whether you would. The platelet finding required 5 grams of oil daily, about ten standard softgels, for four weeks. The blood-pressure trial used 0.75 ml of seed oil, a few drops. The berries trial used 28 grams of fruit, a real snack. Doses decide both what a result means and what it costs, and the study dosages page tabulates every one.

That last one is the realism check working for the science: a dose a person can actually eat, which is why its null result carries weight that a lab-bench dose never could.

Two worked examples, start to finish

The headline: “Studies show sea buckthorn boosts skin hydration by 49 percent.” Run the drill. Human, yes. Placebo, no: the oral arm had none, and the 49 percent comes from the weaker design, while the placebo-controlled trial found 8. Who paid, a brand-linked oil. Which journal, outside the PubMed index. What dose, 2 grams a day for three months, which the label quoting it rarely mentions. Verdict: a real measurement from the weakest-controlled study in the pair, quoted at maximum size.

The blood marker: “Sea buckthorn raises antioxidant enzymes 82.8 percent.” Run the drill. Human and placebo-controlled, good. How many: 40 people, and the enzyme was a secondary endpoint beside the skin outcomes the trial was built around. Secondary markers in small samples swing on a few strong responders, so the honest version reads: an interesting blip worth a bigger study. The skin outcomes from the same trial, 8 to 14 percent, are what a primary endpoint at that sample size looks like.

The claims that fail every check at once

You will meet them: sea buckthorn for weight loss, blood sugar control, immune boosting, detox. Each fails check one immediately, because no human trial tested the claim, and the closest human data points the other way: the pooled trials found no effect on BMI, glucose, or blood pressure, and the berry trial found no effect on colds.
