The short answer

The sea buckthorn immunity shot is a fiery little glass of ginger, turmeric, citrus, and sea buckthorn juice. It tastes great and it is vitamin C rich. What it is not: proven cold prevention, because the one trial that tested sea buckthorn against colds found no effect. Make the shot, enjoy the shot, skip the mythology.

The recipe

Prep: 10 minutes. Yield: 4 shots (about 60 ml each).

  • 120 ml sea buckthorn juice (strained)
  • 1 orange, juiced
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 30 g fresh ginger, grated or blended in
  • 10 g fresh turmeric, grated (or 1 teaspoon ground)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • A pinch of black pepper
  1. Blend everything together until smooth, or whisk hard in a jug if your ginger is finely grated.
  2. Strain through a fine sieve, pressing well.
  3. Pour into small glasses and drink fresh, or bottle and refrigerate.

The weekly batch, scaled

Double everything and you have 8 shots, which is the practical Sunday batch: the bottle keeps 3 to 4 days in the fridge, covering Monday through Thursday, and the rest goes into ice cube trays for the weeks after. Two cubes in a mug of hot (not boiling) water is the instant version, and gentle heat keeps more of the vitamin C than a rolling boil would. Peel ginger and turmeric with a spoon, not a peeler, and your prep time stays under fifteen minutes even doubled.

Troubleshooting

  • Too fiery to swallow. Ginger is the heat. Cut it to 15 g, or blend and strain twice so less fiber carries the burn.
  • Too sour. The berries vary by batch. Add another orange, or move the honey to 2 teaspoons.
  • It separates in the bottle. Normal. Ginger and turmeric solids settle within the hour. Shake before pouring, every time.
  • It tastes bitter. Old ground turmeric or a heavy hand with the pepper. Fresh turmeric is milder and sweeter, and the pepper only needs a pinch.

The gentler version for kids and cautious stomachs

Halve the ginger, skip the pepper, and dilute each shot with an equal part of water or apple juice. Straight shots are intense for small stomachs and for anyone whose digestion dislikes acid on an empty morning. One firm rule carries over from the honey jar: no honey for infants under 12 months, which settles the question for the whole recipe.

Storage

Keeps 3 to 4 days in a sealed bottle in the fridge. Shake before pouring, because the good bits settle. Freeze in ice cube trays for longer keeping and drop a cube into hot water for an instant winter drink.

The honest label

The word immunity is doing marketing work in this name, so here is what the evidence actually says. The one randomized, placebo-controlled trial that dosed sea buckthorn berries (28 grams a day for three months) found no effect on common cold or infection rates. It did find lower C-reactive protein, an inflammation marker, which is interesting and not the same thing as stopping a cold. Our colds and flu page walks through that trial in full, and the immunity benefits page grades the claim itself.

What the shot genuinely offers: a sharp, warming, vitamin C rich habit that tastes like you did something good for yourself. Ginger and turmeric bring their own kitchen credibility. That is a fine reason to make it, and it is the only one we will print.

The same honesty rules apply as for any juice: this is acidic, so rinse your mouth with water afterward, and the safety page has the reasoning. For a calmer daily habit, the tea recipes deliver the same berries in a mug. More honest recipes live on the recipes hub.

Frequently asked questions

Do sea buckthorn immunity shots actually work?

As a cold-prevention tool, no trial supports the claim. The one randomized trial that dosed sea buckthorn berries for three months found no effect on common cold or infection rates, though an inflammation marker improved. Enjoy the shot as a tart, vitamin C rich habit, not as medicine.

When is the best time to drink a shot?

No study says timing matters, so let your stomach decide. With food or right after a meal is the kind choice, since the mix is acidic and the ginger is fiery on an empty stomach. Whatever the hour, rinse your mouth with plain water afterward for your enamel.
